Recap Week 70
This week we saw the first week of the new shortened tournament, a lot has been said about this year’s event. Oracle Rugby loves the Currie Cup, I generally do well at this event, mainly due to it being a not so well priced up event.
I always liken the Currie Cup to Cricket’s IPL where you have a couple of older guys, and some up and coming talent and obviously a boat load of chaps no-one has ever heard of.
Although I made a small loss, I got the Currie Cup 100% correct, a full two out of two, interestingly leading in every SuperBru pool I find myself in, in the top 150 in the world!!
Sadly I did not get either of the two Rugby Championship games right, but its early days and I kept stakes low for a reason.
Pumas v Griquas
Every single week punters have a great opportunity to make money, last week was no different. First up the Pumas took on the Griquas. The first half was one Puma attack after another, finally settling for a couple of peanuts before ultimately scoring the game’s first try.
A fraction before HT the Griquas eventually got on the scoreboard, it did make think twice about pressing, that try looked too easy. Pumas woke up in the second half strip and absolutely obliterated the Griquas to win rather comfortably.

Cheetahs v Bulls
This game was my favourite of the weekend, not because I won, but because it was great rugby, I love Friday night Currie Cup, it is one of my favourite fixtures of the year.
On Wednesday I called a one unit play on the Bulls to win on the board at 9/10, by Friday they were out to an unbelievable 15/10, I pressed at GT. This turned out to be a rather good game for me, although I did not take any extra at HT I did believe I was on the right track.
Cheetahs played OK in the first half, but did miss a couple of opportunities, I expected what I got from them, and they’re playing two tournaments at the same time. Next week they play the Pro 14 away, so this week I expect much of the same, trying out some positions and giving the team a run.
The Bulls finished the Cheetahs off and won by twenty odd.

Wallabies v All Blacks
Jeez this one was quite horrific, sometimes it takes games like this to wake you up, if you backed the lowest All Black minus in recent history, well done to you. I certainly did not see this one coming, but when the end result arrives, one looks at the scoreboard and says to himself, I knew it!!
It’s easy to talk in hindsight, but I was genuinely surprised, the wallabies were utter rubbish, they played like spoilt brats and quite frankly deserved what they got, the All Blacks played their normal great rugby, nothing special, and nothing out of the ordinary, just regular rugby.
The second half display was so weak and demotivating, that I reckon any coach battling to get through to his players should force them to watch it. Lazy running, lack of respect for the jersey, I could go on for hours, it was shocking.
I was just lucky that my discipline held me back from going big here.

Springboks v Los Pumas
Rain was expected, it rained most of Friday and into Saturday morning. I kept a few guys updated and it did look at around 11h00 that the rain would come back, but it ended up being dry. Los Pumas could have used a helping hand, they got one in the form of Handre Pollard.
Pollard who in my memory has never had a great game in Durban, had another shocker, he left around twelve points on the table, and this certainly assisted Los Pumas to stay within the reasonable handicap of just sixteen.
Teams winning with bonus points don’t often win by just thirteen, in fact the Boks were lucky to win by just thirteen, Los Pumas had a couple of squandered chances towards the end of the second half.
Damien Willemse assisted Los Pumas too, chucking ‘Hail Mary’s’ into the sky and Los Pumas had clearly been watching Willemse videos from the U20 JWC. Damien Willemse said the other day he was surprised to be a Bok at 20, I have to agree, although I am not a fan, I do believe he is not ready.
This was a losing bet, however at GT I called a small punt on Los Pumas HT onto Boks FT double result at 6/1. I went for a rather bold call of Los Pumas +10.5 at 15/10 falling short by just 3pts, but I consider myself lucky it was not worse considering the intercept and Pollard failing miserably. Lastly I called a bet at HT on Los Pumas +8.5, sadly it lost!!
