Final Whistle #34
Basteraud the Bastard
I almost had a full house last week with Wellington coming good on the handicap in Sunday morning’s Mitre 10 Cup fixture. At this point, I was excstatic. Over the bloody moon. Jumping for joy. Knocking back beers like a Englishman at Newlands during a Boxing Day Test.
A couple hours later I was even happier. Castres were up by more than a try with eight minutes to go against Toulon. And then it happened. French 12 Matheiu Basteraud the Bastard threw a couple shoulders, a melee ensueed and the Toulon man was handed a red while one of te Castres contingent ws yellow carded.
Castres in the Driving Seat
I wasn’t too concerned at this point as both sides had even numbers and Castres were in the driving seat heading into the final embers of the game. /and then it happened. Toulon launched a fightback of note and managed to claim the spoils by one point and at the same time ruing what would have been a most profitable punt on a Castres win.
Mr Basteraud certainly won’t be receiving any Christmas cards from me this year as his moment of madness turned that game on it’s head. I know it seems senseless as Basteraud did get sent off which forced Toulon to go down to 14 men, but I feel as though if it had stayed 15 on 15 then Castres would have sealed the deal.
Anyway, here’s your lot for the coming weekend.
New Zealand – (just fill the minus in for me if you could.)
Beuaden Barrett – Anytime Tryscorer
