Close but no Cigar
Final Whistle #36
Every punter in the world has endured them. Those weeks where you miss every single bet by the narrowest of margins. I had one this week with the Free State Cheetahs conceding a late try to earn a respectable draw against Ulster in Bloemfontein.
Done by half a Point
The same thing occurred in the other game that I was strong on. I quite fancied Agen to cause an upset against Toulon but I invested a lot more money in the plus 28.5 handicap than I did on the straight Agen win. And would you believe it? I got done on the line again with a late Malakai Fekitoa try seeing Toloun past the handicap.
The most frustrating part of my weekend didn’t actually come in either of these two games but rather the Auckland versus Taranaki clash. At half time I had climbed into the over 62 point line at 2/1. I was rather confident as both teams had been giving the ball a lot of air. I was almost rewarded for my confidence as a Taranaki try in extra time saw the scoreline move to 30-31. The conversion would have seen me past the line.
Who felt the Pressure?
At this point, I was sweating like a Gypsy with a mortgage. One man who was feeling the pressure more than me, though, was Blues and Taranaki young gun, Stephen Perofeta.
The young pivot looked like a deer in the headlights when he placed the ball on the tee. His first attempt at goal ended up drawing to the right of the posts but he was offered another chance due to an early charge from the Auckland defenders. He shouldn’t have, as the second attempt was an absolute shocker with the ball ending up closer to the far touchline than the actual poles.
